How We Work

How We Work

We're fiduciaries, which means we're legally and ethically obligated to act in your interest, not ours. Every recommendation we make is built around your situation, your goals, and your long-term picture. We also believe that good financial guidance should be accessible, which is why we're committed to keeping our fees reasonable and our approach transparent. There are no hidden agendas in how we operate.

We're a team, and that matters in how you experience working with us. When you bring us a question or a concern, you're not waiting for one person to have availability. You have a full team behind your plan, and we make ourselves available for the conversations you need, as often as you need them.

The relationship with money started early. Around age six, I opened my first savings account with deposits I'd earned doing odd jobs around the neighborhood, and that feeling of working toward something and watching it grow stuck with me. By the time I was in college, I'd found my way into banking, and from there into insurance, fixed annuities, and eventually Charles Schwab, where I spent nine years across Private Client Services and the Wealth Management Branch. Passing my Series 7 was the moment the industry really opened up for me, and I haven't looked back since.

What drew me deeper into this work wasn't the technical side, though I came to love that too. It was the people. Every client brings a different story, a different set of circumstances, and a different idea of what they're working toward, and I find all of it genuinely interesting. No two weeks look the same, and that variety is part of what keeps this work engaging after over a decade of doing it.

One of the most meaningful things I'm part of each year is our work with a widows conference, where we hold small group sessions to help women navigate the financial side of an already difficult transition. Watching someone come in overwhelmed and leave with a clearer sense of where they stand is the kind of moment that reminds me why this work matters.

Outside of the office, life is full in the best way. I have a husband and two boys, and when we're not busy with them, there's a good chance we're camping, fishing, out on motorcycles or ATVs, or finding the next concert worth driving to. Cooking and staying active round out the rest.

Over three decades of this work, the moments that still resonate most is sitting with someone, running the numbers together, and watching something click. They see what's actually possible, sometimes for the first time, and that never stops being worth showing up for.

Before founding Cherry Creek Investment Advisors, my path ran through the U.S. Treasury Department and Congress, which gave me an unusually direct early view of how financial systems work from the inside out. Colorado State University came before that, and Denver has been home ever since, though these days that means Castle Rock, where the wildlife outside the window is a genuine perk.

The philosophy that shapes how I work has stayed consistent over the years. Everything gets built around the person in front of me, with no templates and no generic playbooks. Complicated material gets translated into plain language, and the conversation happens between equals rather than across a hierarchy. Beyond client work, I've channeled a good portion of what I've learned into writing, having authored two books with a third currently underway.

My wife and adult child are both partners in the business, which makes Cherry Creek a family operation in more ways than one. Away from work, I'm likely somewhere underwater with a dive tank, behind a camera, or watching the Broncos with more faith than the record probably warrants.

Co-founding Cherry Creek Investment Advisors in 1994 grew out of a specific conviction that doing this work well meant doing it independently, far removed from the product-driven culture of Wall Street and close enough to clients to actually know them. That shaped everything about how the firm was built and how it still operates today.

Before making the move to Colorado, my career started at Mitchell Hutchins Asset Management, a subsidiary of PaineWebber, where I worked my way from Assistant Portfolio Manager to Portfolio Manager and eventually oversaw more than $6 billion across various short-term fixed income and money market mutual funds. It was a formative education in how to invest seriously and without sentiment, and I carried that discipline with me when I decided New York wasn't where I wanted to build a life.

My academic background has shaped how I think about markets in ways that still show up in client conversations today. I earned my BA in Political Science from the University of Vermont, then continued my studies at the University of Nice in France, focusing on international economics and political systems. As global markets have grown increasingly interconnected, that foundation helps me explain to clients why events on the other side of the world have a real bearing on their portfolios here at home.

The investing philosophy I've developed over the years is straightforward by design. Good companies with strong track records, patience, and the discipline to remove emotion from the equation tend to take care of themselves over time. That's been true throughout my career, and it remains the lens through which I manage client portfolios today.

Beyond the business, I've served on nonprofit and government boards focused on the local community and the state, as well as a national investment advisor's council working to raise standards across the industry. At home in Parker, life revolves around three horses I've raised since they were young. As I've put it before, watching them develop into athletes and willing partners has been one of the great joys of my life outside this work.
